Moss gardens might be my new favourite outdoor aesthetic. Here on the West Coast, moss and lichen grow green with abandon. At this time of year, with the rains and snowmelt, the soft moss beds are especially compelling. I’ve made a mental note of several locations to photograph next time I am out in the forest.
If luck is on my side, some small moss crops that have volunteered themselves onto rocks and logs around our property might spread. If they don’t, I can always take advantage of the velvety patchwork offered by the local nursery. In addition, one can mail order moss!
West Coast Seeds now carries a selection of mosses to green your garden (or terrarium) space with something that doesn’t require mowing. It says on the site, “Just add water!”
